WALKER, Mich. — Johnson Park, one of the oldest parks in the Kent County system, now offers more ways to get outside in every season. On Oct. 23, the Kent County Parks Department, the West Michigan Mountain Biking Alliance (WMMBA) and community partners gathered at the park to cut the ribbon on new trails and amenities built for people of all ages and abilities.

The improvements include a four-season restroom, covered gathering spaces and a new system of professionally built trails for mountain biking, hiking and running. Johnson Park is the westernmost trailhead of the Grand River Greenway, so the new trails also connect to the region’s larger paved trail network.

The eight-mile trail system has three loops: green for beginners, blue for intermediate riders and orange for advanced riders. The green and blue loops are built to accommodate adaptive bikes for riders with physical disabilities, and features on the more challenging sections have bypass routes so riders can choose their own level of difficulty.

The four-season restroom keeps the park usable year-round. The covered gathering spaces give families, groups and trail users a place to meet, rest and get out of the weather.
